Mike Dooley (James Belushi) works for the San Diego police department trying to catch drug dealers and put them in jail. But, while trying to catch a drug leader Ken Lyman (Tracy Kevin Tighe) he is almost killed. So Mike is assigned a special partner to help him: Jerry Lee (Koton) a K-9 police dog who can sniff out drugs. To Mike, Jerry Lee is just a pain and is ruining his life. He doesn't think he needs his help. But when Ken kidnaps Mike's girlfriend Tracy (Mel Harris) he realizes he could use all the help he can get. He discovers the dog is more intelligent than he thought.
