Death Row. That's where Bobby Earl (Blair Underwood) sits. Until Paul Armstrong (Sean Connery), a law professor and advocate against the death penalty, receives a letter from Bobby. Paul travels to Florida to meet Bobby who professes his innocence on charges of rape and murder. He also claims that the real killer is there on death row for another crime. Bobby pleads for Paul to clear him. Paul starts reviewing the 8 year old case but gets a cold reception from Sheriff Tanny Brown (Laurence Fishburne), the cop that had gotten Bobby's confession. But when Paul talks to Blair Sullivan (Ed Harris), the other inmate on Death Row, he discovers evidence that frees Bobby. Along the way, Paul discovers facts he didn't expect, facts that will endanger the lives of his wife and daughter.
