Two lawyers, a father and daughter, meet head to head in a courtroom when they each represent the opposite side of a case. Jedediah Tucker Ward (Gene Hackman) is a trial attorney who has always been seen as a champion of the underdog. His reputation is built on cases in which he helps everyday people fight large money-hungry corporations. His daughter Maggie (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is also a lawyer, but with a different career goal in mind. She wants to become a partner in a large San Francisco corporate firm. Jedediah thinks Maggie’s selling out, and she thinks he defends the little people to make himself look good. A class action law suit against a car manufacturer brings the two face to face, with Maggie representing the car company, and Jedediah representing the people.
