Kaena (Kirsten Dunst) is the main character of this French animated movie. It begins when an alien ship crashes on a desert planet. The surviving aliens from the ship, the Vecarians are then killed by the planets inhabitants, the Selenites, but the core of the ship survives and from it grows Axis, an enormous tree reaching up into space. Six hundred years later a human-like race evolves, living on the branches of the tree. Kaena is one the inhabitants of the Axis tree. She is adventurous and curious. Although the village elder doesn't let her, she secretly climbs to the top of the Axis tree and finds an ancient alien Opaz (Richard Harris), the last surviving member of the Vecarian race. He wants her to go to the bottom of the tree where Selenites live and retrieve Vecanoi, the core of the ship which holds the collective memory of the Vecarian race.
