Professor David Gale (Kevin Spacey) is an anti-death penalty activist in Austin, Texas, where he used to teach philosophy at the University before being dismissed due to a false charge of rape of a student at a drunken party. He has now been convicted of a second terrible crime, the rape and murder of fellow activist and friend Constance Hattaway (Laura Linney), but insists he is innocent. During the last few days of his life on death row Gale is interviewed by tough crusading reporter Bitsey Bloom (Kate Winslet). He tells her the story of his life in the form of flashbacks, detailing the good and the bad, including his divorce and his descent to minimum wage jobs and alcoholism. The more she learns of his life, the more Bitsey comes to believe that Gale is in fact not guilty, just as he has claimed. Instead, he may be the victim of a secret right-wing conspiracy. She must uncover the facts before the hour arrives for Gale’s lethal injection.
